  It recalls how Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai foiled the scheme o
 f the royal minister Haman\, so that the day set for the Jews' destructi
 on became one of rescue. Observed on the fourteenth of Adar\, in late wi
 nter\, it is marked by the public reading of the Scroll of Esther\, duri
 ng which the crowd blots out Haman's name with noise. Customs include se
