Pier Antonio Micheli was an Italian botanist regarded as the father of modern mycology. In his 1729 Nova Plantarum Genera he was the first to show that fungi reproduce from spores rather than arising by spontaneous generation, demonstrating the point with melon slice experiments, and he described roughly nine hundred fungi and lichens among the nearly nineteen hundred plants the book covered. Micheli served as botanist to Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and directed the botanical gardens of Florence.
