Henry Clifton Sorby (1826 to 1908) was an English scientist who pioneered the microscopic study of metals, adapting the thin-section and etching techniques he had already developed for rock and meteorite samples to polished steel. His 1864 paper on what etched microstructure revealed about a metal's crystalline grains founded metallography, the direct ancestor of materials science's study of how internal structure governs a material's properties.
