English geologist and seismologist (1850 to 1913) who, after the 1880 Yokohama earthquake, worked with James Alfred Ewing and Thomas Gray to design one of the first modern seismographs and founded the Seismological Society of Japan; he refined the design into the horizontal-pendulum Milne seismograph of 1893 and later ran a private seismological station on the Isle of Wight.
