Italian physicist and mathematician (1608 to 1647) who filled a sealed glass tube with mercury and inverted it into a dish in 1643 to 44, producing the first sustained vacuum and the first mercury barometer; he succeeded Galileo as professor of mathematics at the Florentine Academy after serving as his last secretary and assistant.
