John Frederick Dewey

John Frederick Dewey is a British structural geologist born May 22, 1937, in London, who held professorships at the University of Oxford from 1986 to 2000 and later at the University of California, Davis, after earlier posts at Manchester, Cambridge, Memorial University of Newfoundland, SUNY Albany, and Durham. A strong proponent of plate tectonics theory and widely regarded as an authority on mountain range development, his research focused on the tectonic history of the Appalachians, the Caledonides, and the Himalayas. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1985, received the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America in 1992, was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1997, received the Wollaston Medal in 1999, and was elected a corresponding member of the Australian Academy of Science in 2011.
