John Horne

John Horne was a Scottish geologist born January 1, 1848, in Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland, who died May 30, 1928, in Edinburgh, and who, together with Ben Peach, resolved the Highlands Controversy over the structure of Scotland Northwest Highlands through detailed geological mapping of the Central Lowlands and the 1907 publication The Geological Structure of the North-West Highlands of Scotland, described as one of the most important geological memoirs of its time; he also contributed to the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland in 1901. He joined the Scottish Branch of Her Majesty Geological Survey in 1867 and directed it from 1901 to 1911. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1881, won the Neill Prize between 1889 and 1892, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1900, served as president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1915 to 1919 and president of the Edinburgh Geological Society, and received the Wollaston Medal jointly with Ben Peach in 1921.
