John R. L. Allen

John R. L. Allen was a British geologist who lived from 1932 to 2020 and spent a thirty seven year career at the University of Reading, rising from lecturer to Personal Professor of Geology in 1972 and directing its Postgraduate Research Institute in Sedimentology from 1988, known for substantial contributions to sedimentology and archaeology. He received the Lyell Medal in 1980, the Twenhofel Medal in 1987, the G. K. Warren Prize in 1990 and the Sorby Medal in 1994, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979 and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1991. He received the Penrose Medal in 1996.
