John Rodgers

John Rodgers was an American geologist who lived from 1914 to 2004 and held the Silliman Professorship of Geology at Yale University for the latter part of his career. He conducted extensive research on the geology of Connecticut, producing a full geological map of the state in 1985 that became a foundational resource for regional geological understanding, and co-authored the textbook Principles of Stratigraphy in 1957 and the autobiography The Company I Kept in 2001. He served as editor of the American Journal of Science from 1954 to 1995 and as president of the Geological Society of America in 1970, and during the Second World War mapped Pacific theater beachheads for the United States Geological Survey. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He received the Penrose Medal in 1981.
