Paul Fourmarier

Paul Frederic Joseph Fourmarier was a Belgian geologist born December 25, 1877, in La Hulpe, Province of Brabant, Belgium, who died January 20, 1970, in Liege, Belgium, at age 92, and who graduated from the University of Liege in 1899 and became a professor of geology there in 1920. He specialized in the study of fold structures and cleavage, described overthrust nappes in the Ardennes, and researched Belgian geology, the geology of the former Belgian Congo, and continental drift. He received the Penrose Medal in 1952 and the Wollaston Medal in 1957; the mineral fourmarierite and the Fourmarier Prize are named in his honor.
