Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893-1972) was an Indian scientist and statistician who made pioneering contributions to statistical science and economic planning. He developed the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure used in multivariate analysis, and founded the Indian Statistical Institute. His work on large-scale sample surveys and anthropometric studies helped build India's statistical capacity, and he is remembered as the father of statistics in India.
