John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (1899-1980) was an American physicist and mathematician. He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics with Philip W. Anderson and Nevill Mott for contributions to the understanding of the behavior of electronic magnetism in solids. He is credited with founding the quantum mechanical theory of magnetism, including crystal field theory and ligand field theory.
