Sally McConnell-Ginet

Sally McConnell-Ginet is an American linguist born in the late 1930s and professor emerita of linguistics at Cornell University, where she joined the faculty in 1973 with joint appointments in womens studies and philosophy, directed the womens studies program, co-founded the cognitive studies program, and chaired the linguistics department. Her scholarship examines the language of gender and sexuality, including the 1978 article Intonation in a Mans World and the books Language and Gender, co-authored with Penelope Eckert in 2003, and Gender, Sexuality, and Meaning: Linguistic Practice and Politics in 2011. She served as president of the International Gender and Language Association and of the Linguistic Society of America in 2006, and was elected a fellow of the Linguistic Society of America and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008.
