Sir Alan Howard Cottrell was an English metallurgist and physicist known for his work on the mechanical behavior of metals, including how impurity atoms interact with dislocations to affect a material's strength. He served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government and was Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1977 to 1979.
