Robert Barany was an Austrian-born otologist known for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus, the inner ear system responsible for balance and spatial orientation. He conducted experiments using temperature-induced fluid movement within the ear to study how the vestibular system detects motion and orientation, research that helped explain the mechanisms behind balance and dizziness. He received the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for these discoveries. Barany was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, in 1876.
