Corneille Jean Francois Heymans was a Belgian physiologist, born in 1892 and died in 1968, who demonstrated that the body measures blood pressure and oxygen levels through specialized receptors that transmit this information to the brain by way of nerves, rather than through the bloodstream itself. This work on the nervous regulation of respiration through blood pressure and blood oxygen sensing earned him the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
