Arthur Kornberg was an American biochemist whose research centered on enzyme chemistry, DNA replication, and the nucleic acids that govern heredity. He shared the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Severo Ochoa for the discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid. He also received the Paul-Lewis Award in Enzyme Chemistry in 1951, the National Medal of Science in 1979, and the Gairdner Foundation Award in 1995.
