Harald zur Hausen was a German virologist, born in 1936 and died in 2023, who discovered the role of human papillomavirus in causing cervical cancer. This discovery led to the development of vaccines against the virus and earned him the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which he shared with Luc Montagnier and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi.
