The Institut Pasteur was founded by decree on 4 June 1887 in Paris after Louis Pasteur's international appeal for funds, made in the wake of his rabies vaccine's public success, and was formally inaugurated on 14 November 1888. Pasteur served as its first director until his death in 1895. It remains a private, non-profit research foundation focused on infectious disease and microbiology, with ten Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine having worked there over its history, including the co-discoverers of HIV, Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier, in 1983.
