The European Molecular Biology Laboratory was founded in 1974 as a supranational research centre, an idea put forward by prominent scientists who wanted to redress the balance in the strongly US-dominated field of molecular biology. The Nobel laureate Sir John Kendrew, one of its founding fathers, served as its first Director General until 1982. Known as Europe's life sciences laboratory, it now works from six European sites, attracting both young investigators and established scientists from all over the world to its research, training and scientific services.
