SRI International, originally the Stanford Research Institute, is a nonprofit scientific research institute headquartered in Menlo Park, California. Stanford University trustees established it in 1946 as a center of innovation, it formally separated from the university in 1970, and it took the name SRI International in 1977. It performs client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses and private foundations, licenses its technologies and creates spin-off companies. Its work has included the computer mouse prototype, the Shakey mobile robot, an early ARPANET node and the research behind the Siri assistant that Apple acquired. It employs about 2,100 people, and its focus areas range from biomedical sciences, chemistry and materials to computing, energy and defense.
