Research institutes founded inside a university, or inside a museum or college that later became part of one, to carry out a program of research apart from the ordinary teaching departments. They often bring specialists from several fields under one roof, as the Institute for the Study of Metals joined metallurgists, physicists and chemists at the University of Chicago, and as the Geophysical Institute of Bergen grew into the center of a school of weather forecasting. An institution belongs here when its cited article describes it as an institute of a university, or of a museum that became part of one. It excludes federally funded centers that a university runs for a government sponsor, and independent institutes with their own endowment, which sit in their own groups.
