Sir Alan Rushton Battersby was an English organic chemist best known for defining the chemical intermediates and enzyme mechanisms in the biosynthetic pathway that builds vitamin B12, one of the most complex natural products known. His research group also synthesized radiolabelled precursors to trace alkaloid biosynthesis and to study the stereochemistry of enzyme catalyzed reactions, and he was awarded the Royal Medal in 1984 before receiving the Copley Medal in 2000.
