Horace Bolingbroke Woodward was a British geologist born August 20, 1848, who died February 6, 1914, and who served with the Geological Survey of England and Wales from 1867 until his retirement in 1908, authoring works on the geology of England, the Lias formation, the geological history and water supply of the country, and the history of geology as a discipline; he was the second son of the geologist Samuel Pickworth Woodward, grandson of the geologist and antiquary Samuel Woodward, and brother of the malacologist Bernard Barham Woodward. He was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society in 1868 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1896, served as vice president of the Geological Society, won the Murchison Medal in 1897, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1909.
