Richard Blane Alley is an American geologist born August 18, 1957, who is the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Pennsylvania State University. His research on ice cores from Greenland showed that the last ice age ended abruptly rather than through gradual change, and his broader work addresses abrupt climate change, ice sheet dynamics, and the relationship of the cryosphere to global climate across more than two hundred forty peer reviewed publications. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2008, was named a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 2014, received the Wollaston Medal in 2017, and received the National Medal of Science in 2025.
