Osamu Shimomura was a Japanese organic chemist and marine biologist, professor emeritus at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. He was awarded a share of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery and development of green fluorescent protein, a tool that lets researchers watch biological processes inside living cells.
