William S. Knowles was an American chemist who shared half of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Ryoji Noyori for their work on chirally catalyzed hydrogenation reactions used in asymmetric synthesis; the other half of that prize went to K. Barry Sharpless for chirally catalyzed oxidation reactions.
