Sandra Chung

Sandra Chung is an American linguist and distinguished professor emerita of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, whose research addresses syntax and semantics with particular expertise in Austronesian languages, including Chamorro and Maori. Her work with William Ladusaw in the 2003 book Restriction and Saturation argued that the number and kind of semantic combinatoric operations available to natural language must be expanded beyond standard function application, and she later produced Chamorro Grammar, an open access comprehensive reference published in 2020. She was elected a fellow of the Linguistic Society of America in 2007, served as its president in 2011, and became a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012; a festschrift honored her work in 2017.
