Elwyn Owen Arnold Welch was a New Zealand farmer, ornithologist and conservationist. An expert in raising endangered bird chicks, he is best known for his part in the captive breeding of the newly rediscovered takahe in the 1950s, work that lives on today as the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.
