Gerhard Ertl

Gerhard Ertl is a German physicist and professor emeritus at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. He was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces, work that laid the foundation of modern surface chemistry and helped explain how catalytic converters clean vehicle exhaust and why iron rusts.
