Herbert Aaron Hauptman was an American mathematician who shared the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Jerome Karle. He pioneered and developed a mathematical method, known as direct methods, that changed the field of X-ray crystallography and opened a new era in the determination of the molecular structures of crystallized materials.
