Jerome Karle was an American physical chemist who, jointly with Herbert A. Hauptman, was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing direct methods for the analysis of crystal structures using X-ray scattering techniques. He also worked on the Manhattan Project and spent decades researching at the United States Naval Research Laboratory.
