Giulio Natta was an Italian chemical engineer and Nobel laureate who lived from 1903 to 1979. His work at the Politecnico di Milano built on earlier research by Karl Ziegler and led to the development of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst; together their discoveries enabled the low pressure, stereospecific polymerization of olefins, particularly propylene, into highly ordered, crystalline isotactic polypropylene, allowing production of high strength plastics that had previously been unobtainable. Natta shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Ziegler for this work and also received the Lomonosov Gold Medal in 1969.
