Owen Thomas Jones

Owen Thomas Jones was a Welsh geologist born April 16, 1878, in Beulah, Ceredigion, Wales, who died May 5, 1967, at age 89, and who worked for the British Geological Survey from 1903, became the first professor of geology at Aberystwyth in 1910, moved to a professorship of geology at the University of Manchester in 1913, and held the Woodwardian Professorship of Geology at the University of Cambridge from 1930 to 1943. He devoted his career to Welsh geology, produced more than 140 publications, and published research identifying the Welsh source of the bluestones used at Stonehenge. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1926, received the Lyell Medal in 1926 and the Royal Medal in 1956, served twice as president of the Geological Society of London, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1945.
