Herbert Harold Read

Herbert Harold Read was a British geologist born December 17, 1889, in Whitstable, Kent, England, who died March 29, 1970, at age 80, and who held professorships at the University of Liverpool from 1931 to 1939 and at Imperial College London, served as Dean of the Royal School of Mines from 1943 to 1945, and served as president of the Geological Society from 1947 to 1948. His research centered on rock metamorphism and the origins of granite, and he chaired the scientific committee for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1955 to 1958. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1939, received the Bigsby Medal in 1935, the Wollaston Medal in 1952, the Royal Medal in 1963 for his work on metamorphism and granite, and the Penrose Medal in 1967; the Read Mountains in Antarctica are named in his honor.
