Edward Stolper

Edward Manin Stolper is an American geologist and petrologist born December 16, 1952, who is a professor at the California Institute of Technology. His research on igneous rocks includes pioneering experiments defining the behavior of volatiles such as water, carbon dioxide, fluorine, and sulfur in silicate melts and glasses, applied to geological samples from Earth, the Moon, Mars, and meteorites, and he contributed to NASA Curiosity rover mission; the mineral stolperite is named in his honor. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1994 and the Royal Society in 2011, and received the Arthur L. Day Medal in 2004 and the Wollaston Medal in 2019.
