Maureen Raymo

Maureen E. Raymo is an American paleoclimatologist and marine geologist born December 27, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, who is the G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and co-founding dean emerita of the Columbia Climate School at Columbia University. With William Ruddiman and Philip Froelich she developed the uplift weathering hypothesis explaining how mountain building enhances mineral weathering and removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and with Lorraine Lisiecki she created the LR04 benthic isotope stack in 2005, a widely used record of past ocean temperature and ice volume; she also led the PLIOMAX project studying past sea level change. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2016 and received the Wollaston Medal in 2014, its first woman recipient in one hundred eighty three years, and the Maurice Ewing Medal in 2019.
