Maurice Irenee Marie Gignoux, known as Maurice Gignoux, was a French geologist born October 19, 1881, in Lyon, France, who died October 20, 1955, in Grenoble, France, and who became an authority on Alpine stratigraphy, publishing the landmark 1925 work Geologie stratigraphique, which was translated into several languages and went through multiple editions. He taught at a high school in Besancon from 1905 to 1907, worked under Wilfrid Kilian at Grenoble from 1909, taught at the Faculty of Sciences in Toulouse from 1918 to 1919, organized geology teaching at Strasbourg from 1919 to 1925, succeeded Kilian as professor at the University of Grenoble from 1926 to 1953, and served as dean of its Faculty of Sciences from 1940 to 1953. His 1913 doctoral thesis won the Fontannes Prize, and this wave grounds his 1955 Penrose Medal in the Geological Society of America own recipient roster.
