Rudolf Trumpy

Rudolf Trumpy was a Swiss geologist born August 16, 1921, in Glarus, Switzerland, who died January 30, 2009, in Kussnacht, Switzerland, and who worked at the University of Lausanne from 1947 to 1953 and then at ETH Zurich from 1953 to 1986 after graduating from ETH Zurich in the late 1940s. He specialized in alpine geology while also researching extra alpine regions including Greenland, the Montagne Noire, and the Sahara, authored the reference work Geology of Switzerland, and was first to describe several stratigraphic formations in the western Alps. He received the Gustav Steinmann Medal in 1998, was elected a foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1978 and a member of the French Academy of Sciences, and received both the Wollaston Medal, in 2002, and the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America.
