Waldemar Lindgren

Waldemar Lindgren was a Swedish-American geologist born February 14, 1860, in Vassmolosa, Kalmar Municipality, Smaland, Sweden, who died November 3, 1939, in Brighton, Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and who is regarded as a founder of modern economic geology, conducting extensive research on ore deposits in the Rocky Mountains during a thirty one year career with the United States Geological Survey from 1884 to 1915 and helping establish the journal Economic Geology in 1905. He became head of the Department of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1912, authored roughly two hundred publications on ore deposits, and published the widely used textbook Mineral Deposits in editions between 1913 and 1933. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1909, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1912, the American Philosophical Society in 1917, and as a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1931, served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1924, won the Society of Economic Geologists Penrose Gold Medal in 1928, the Geological Society of America Penrose Medal in 1933, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1937.
