Beno Gutenberg

Beno Gutenberg was a German-American seismologist who made foundational contributions to understanding the deep structure of the Earth through the study of seismic waves. In 1913, analyzing how seismic waves from earthquakes traveled through and around the Earth's interior, Gutenberg determined the depth of the boundary between the Earth's rocky mantle and its molten outer core, now known as the core-mantle boundary or the Gutenberg discontinuity, and calculated its depth with an accuracy that later measurements confirmed was close to correct. After emigrating from Germany to the United States, Gutenberg spent much of his later career at the California Institute of Technology, where he worked closely with Charles Richter; together they developed the Gutenberg-Richter law, a mathematical relationship describing how the frequency of earthquakes of a given magnitude decreases as magnitude increases, a foundational relationship still used in seismic hazard assessment. Gutenberg's broader body of work on the structure of the Earth's crust, mantle and core helped establish observational seismology as a central tool for studying the planet's interior.
