Peter R. Vail

Peter R. Vail was an American geologist and geophysicist who lived from 1930 to 2024 and spent much of his career at Rice University as the W. Maurice Ewing Professor Emeritus of Earth Science, credited with founding the discipline of seismic stratigraphy through his recognition that seismic reflections align with geologic time surfaces rather than lithologic boundaries. He is best known for developing the Vail curve documenting global sea level fluctuations through geologic history. He received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in 2005 for his pioneering work in sequence stratigraphy, along with the Sidney Powers Memorial Award and the Legendary Geoscientist Award of the American Geological Institute. He received the Penrose Medal in 2003.
