Tanya Marie Atwater is an American geophysicist and marine geologist born in 1942 in Los Angeles, California, who is professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from which she retired in 2007. Her research reconstructed the plate tectonic evolution of western North America, studied seafloor spreading and propagating rifts near the Galapagos Islands, explained the San Andreas Fault as a boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, and examined hydrothermal vents and ocean floor geology. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1997, received the Penrose Medal in 2019, and received the Wollaston Medal in 2022.
