Bertrand Halperin

Physics

Bertrand I. Halperin is an American theoretical condensed matter physicist, born in 1941, recognized for contributions across multiple areas of physics including the hexatic phase, the quantum Hall effect and the KTHNY theory of two-dimensional melting. He held the Hollis Chair of Mathematicks and Natural Philosophy in the physics department at Harvard University. He received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 1982, the Lars Onsager Prize in 2001 and the APS Medal for Exceptional Achievement in Research in 2019. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2003, shared with Anthony James Leggett, for his work on two-dimensional melting, disordered systems and strongly interacting electrons.
