Jainendra K. Jain

Jainendra K. Jain is an Indian-American physicist specializing in condensed matter theory and quantum physics, born in 1960, recognized for postulating composite fermions and developing the composite fermion theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, which unified fractional and integral quantum Hall effects. He is Evan Pugh University Professor and Eberly Chair in Physics at Pennsylvania State University. He received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 2002 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2021. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2025, shared with James P. Eisenstein and Mordehai Heiblum, for advancing understanding of the surprising properties of two-dimensional electron systems in strong magnetic fields.
