James P. Eisenstein

James P. Eisenstein is an American physicist, born in 1952, recognized for experimental research on strongly interacting two-dimensional electron systems, including co-discovering the 5/2 filling factor state of the fractional quantum Hall effect and demonstrating Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in two dimensions. He is Frank J. Roshek Professor of Physics and Applied Physics, Emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology. He received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 2007, shared with Steven M. Girvin and Allan H. MacDonald. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2025, shared with Jainendra K. Jain and Mordehai Heiblum, for advancing understanding of the surprising properties of two-dimensional electron systems in strong magnetic fields.
