Sir John Brian Pendry is an English theoretical physicist born July 4, 1943, professor of theoretical solid state physics at Imperial College London. He is renowned for pioneering work on metamaterials and the creation of the first practical invisibility cloak, and his most cited 2000 paper in Physical Review Letters introduced the concept of a superlens with theoretically perfect focus, revolutionizing nanoscale optics. He shared the 2014 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience with Thomas Ebbesen and Stefan Hell, and he also received the 2025 Copley Medal, the 2024 Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology and the 2013 Isaac Newton Medal, and was knighted in 2004.
