Arthur William Rogers

Arthur William Rogers was a British and South African geologist born June 5, 1872, in Bishops Hull, near Taunton, Somerset, England, who died June 23, 1946, in Mowbray, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa, and who charted remote regions of Cape Province and mapped the Transvaal gold fields over a career with South Africa geological survey beginning as assistant geologist from 1896 to 1902, geologist from 1902 to 1911, and assistant director of the Cape of Good Hope Geological Commission from 1911 to 1916, culminating in his service as director of the Geological Survey of South Africa from 1916 to 1932; he hosted the International Congress of Geologists in South Africa in 1929. He studied at the University of Cambridge and published An Introduction to the Geology of Cape Colony in 1905. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918, served as president of the Royal Society of South Africa from 1935 to 1936, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1931.
