Jethro Teall

Sir Jethro Justinian Harris Teall, known as Jethro Teall, was a British geologist and petrographer born January 5, 1849, in Northleach, Gloucestershire, England, who died July 2, 1924, in London, and who specialized in petrography and igneous rocks, publishing British Petrography: with Special Reference to the Igneous Rocks in 1888; the mineral teallite is named in his honor. He served as director of His Majesty Geological Survey from 1901, personally completing much fieldwork in northwest Scotland, and as president of the Geological Society of London from 1900 to 1902. He won the Sedgwick Prize in 1874 for a study of the Lower Greensand, the Bigsby Medal in 1889, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1890, received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Dublin, Oxford and St Andrews, was knighted in 1916, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1905.
