Olaf Holtedahl

Olaf Holtedahl was a Norwegian geologist born June 24, 1885, in Kristiania, now Oslo, Norway, who died August 26, 1975, and who became a senior lecturer at the University of Oslo in 1914 and professor of geology there from 1920 to 1956. His research addressed the Cambrosilurian geology of the Oslo Rift, included Arctic expeditions to Svalbard and Lapland and Antarctic exploration, and he significantly influenced later Quaternary geology through his doctoral student Bjorn G. Andersen; he took part in the Norwegian resistance movement during the Second World War. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1961, was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1951.
